Commissioned by Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art, London.
In Testament A: MF FKA K-P X KE RIP (2019), a new work commissioned for If UR Reading This It's 2 Late, Vol. 1 at Goldsmiths CCA (September 29, 2019 – January 19, 2020), Tony Cokes cites Kodwo Eshun’s comemorative lecture for Mark Fisher, cultural theorist and founder of k-punk. Held a year after Fisher's death at Goldsmiths University in 2018, Cokes' work studies the labor of mourning through Eshun’s elegiac discussion of Fisher’s work. The musicality of Eshun's words is explored through the pace and edit of the text across consecutive frames of intensely bright colors and the hypnotizing trance music soundtrack. The work stages a second act of memorialisation to Eshun’s lecture, and a reiteration of Fisher’s legacy.
