The following images comprise work-in-progress stills and ink sketches made in the process of storyboarding a new animated video by Helen Marten. The written notes provide textural detail and description of animated process, action and lighting.
This is a film primarily about love, its making and its breaking, the electric greens of its happiness and the vinegar burn of its end. This is a film about language, its craft and its perversions. This is a film about writing a play, the constructs and the chapters. This is a film about audience, local fragrance and global manipulation. This is a film about sex, its heat and its sadness. This is a film about the analyst’s abstractions, the surrealist’s dogmatic attention to material texture. This is a film that gives life to magic or dust, that questions the stability of the material world and our place within it. Alluding to speech, systems and intentionality, the video sets out to imagine the miraculous substructure beneath the veneer of our habitual lives. These are all concepts that do not necessarily have a defined physical shape in the world: the notions of desire and permeability; the emotional capacity of colour or the verbal distortions of text. Metaphor is a widely used device. This video operates on the premise of an expanding set of ‘qualities’: animal and figure, corruption and diagram.
The video will premiere in 2021 in Marten’s solo exhibitions at Kunsthaus Bregenz and Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea, Turin (dates tbc). The video will be manifested with a luscious, generous CGI and displayed on a sculptural wall system conceived uniquely for the exhibitions. All animation by Adam Sinclair.
