As generative AI floods the world with images, texts, and music produced without human authors, a crisis is emerging at the heart of cultural production. What is a work of art when a machine can approximate it in seconds? What is authorship, originality, or expertise worth in this environment? Is this crisis actually new, or is it the latest version of a question that artists, writers, and critics have been grappling with for decades? Three practitioners from visual art, criticism, and literature chime in.
