RICHARD HAWKINS has developed a body of work that turns on the erotics of visibility, fueled by what he calls “a combination of historical research and boyish obsessions.” This major survey at the Kunsthalle Wien comprises over 100 works, presenting a selection of paintings, collage, sculpture and video from the past twenty years. Employing collage as a guiding principle to structure his compositions, Hawkins has described his work as “promiscuously referential”—quoting freely from popular culture and art history alike. Using tactics of accretion and layering to cross genres and tonal registers, Hawkins’s practice taps the complex workings of desire.
