LUBAINA HIMID in the Sharjah Biennial 15: Thinking Historically in the Present

February 7 – June 11, 2023
Sharjah, United Arab Emirates

Conceived by the late Okwui Enwezor and curated by Hoor Al Qasimi, Director of Sharjah Art Foundation, Sharjah Biennial 15: Thinking Historically in the Present reflects on Enwezor’s visionary work, which transformed contemporary art and established an ambitious intellectual project that has influenced the evolution of institutions and biennials around the world. Hoor Al Qasimi interprets and re-envisions the titular proposal by the late thinker to critically center the past within the contemporary moment.

Exhibition sites are a range of venues, including the Sharjah Art Foundation, the Sharjah Art Museum, and the nearby traditional buildings and courtyards of the Arts and Heritage areas. Central to the Biennial's planning are educational and outreach programs designed to engage the diverse communities of the UAE. A Biennial Prize is awarded on each occasion by a jury of prominent art world figures.
