Curated by Anne Pontegnie, the 10th Biennial of Painting takes place across three Belgian museums: Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, Roger Raveel Museum, and mudel. The exhibition gathers artists working across diverse visual languages, each with their own relationship to the definition of painting, proposing a framework which enriches, rather than eradicates, the differences in each artist's origins.
In Lubaina Himid’s Five Conversations (2019), figures populate five wooden doors reclaimed from Georgian townhouses. Installed together, the five figures stage a theatrical tableau of implied conversation. Himid's Aunties (2023)—wooden planks which invoke the socially expansive category of the 'auntie'—anthropomorphize the medium of painting, suggesting a communal gathering rather than a fixity of likeness.
