Burnaway: Contemporary Art and Criticism from the South

2021 Art Writing Incubator

July 13, 2021, 7:00-8:30 PM EDT

Registration required

Where does art criticism belong in a world in crisis? The last year has upended the art world, dissolved cultural norms, and revealed fractures in our sociopolitical systems. To address this issue and more, Burnaway has invited artist, writer and publisher Paul Chan to give a keynote lecture for the 2021 edition of Burnaway's signature education program, the Art Writing Incubator.

Chan's hour-long talk related to his long career, practice and theories will be followed by a Q&A.

Held each summer, Art Writing Incubator (AWrI) is Burnaway’s annual writing intensive, which cultivates the next generation of critics through a series of day-long workshops with leading culture writers from around the country and one-on-one tutorials with Burnaway’s editors. The Art Writing Incubator aspires to foster new voices in the field of arts criticism, by emphasizing the discipline’s capacity to galvanize a more equitable, nimble and dynamic cultural landscape.
