LUBAINA HIMID with Magda Stawarska: Attendre ensemble
Chapelle Saint-Louis de la Salpêtrière, Paris
Presented as part of Festival d'Automne
November 6 – December 20, 2026
On the occasion of Paris’s annual Festival d’Automne, Lubaina Himid and Magda Stawarska present Attendre ensemble, a new and monumental installation at the Chapelle Saint-Louis de la Salpêtrière, transforming the building into a space for commemoration and attentive listening.
Spanning painting, printmaking, textile, and sound, the commission continues nearly a decade of collaboration between Himid and Stawarska. Together, the artists transform the chapel’s nave with sweeping lengths of African Dutch wax fabric, screenprinted with architectural plans and fragments of the body. One hundred individually named, hand-painted chairs form a congregation of women waiting and listening, surrounded by an immersive soundscape of voices counting to 60 in more than 30 languages. Reflecting on the chapel’s storied architecture, Himid describes how a space intended for “reflection, hope, and peace” was also historically “a battleground of power and control.”
Curated by Clément Dirié.
As part of the Festival d'Automne, the Musée d'Art Moderne also presents Himid's renowned life-size cutout installation A Fashionable Marriage (1986), on view through January 10, 2027.
