Steffani Jemison’s upcoming solo exhibition Augur explores the “language of birds," a term used in various spiritual and mythological traditions to describe a divine, perfect language accessible only to initiates. Jemison's new installation builds off of her long-standing interest in flight as both a symbolic and physical experience of suspension and transcendence. It also highlights Jemison's exploration of language—particularly the question of how language, text, and gesture simultaneously serve expression and concealment.

On September 6, Steffani Jemison and Quincy Flowers will present a new iteration of the performance Flight Theater, an ongoing practice that reflects on the desire to escape Earth.
