STEFFANI JEMISON in Constitutive Outside
October 22 – December 13, 2026
The Carpenter Center
24 Quincy St
Cambridge, MA 02138
Constitutive Outside brings together works by STEFFANI JEMISON, Markele Cullins, Jibade-Khalil Huffman, and Rindon Johnson. Across performance, installation, and screen space, the exhibition examines how subjectivity emerges through misrecognition, non-coincidence, and the limits of representation. This group exhibition stages visibility and signification as contingent and ongoing practices rather than fixed individuations, troubling prominent notions of the relationship between representation and subjectivity.
On November 19 at ArtLab Harvard University, STEFFANI JEMISON, JaLeel Marques Porcha, and Andros Zins-Browne will perform Cynosure, a performance that is part of JEMISON’s In Succession series, that continues her exploration of how black life and black geographies are often ignored or rendered elusive by Colonial frameworks, and how other forms of relationships can emerge.
Organized by Tarik Garrett, the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts' 2026 Curatorial Research Fellow
