Batalha Centro de Cinema presents the first solo exhibition in Portugal by Tony Cokes, featuring a newly commissioned artwork alongside other, now-canonic films from throughout his career. Awarded the prestigious MacArthur Foundation Fellowship earlier this year, Cokes makes media and installations grounded in a unique and sonically powerful visual semantics, drawing on texts that examine capitalism, coloniality, consumption and other systems of power. Through vividly colored images that center the written word, Cokes often places today's popular culture in dialogue with critical texts that punctuate the discursive evolution of these subjects
