TONY COKES in Coyote Time
Counterpublic 2026
St. Louis, MI
September 12 – December 12, 2026
Counterpublic's 2026 triennial edition will unfold across five key sites shaped by St. Louis’s historical and civic conditions, bringing together artists engaging urgent issues including education, climate, technology and immigration. The title —Coyote Time—draws from artist Alice Bucknell’s 2026 commission, a video game set within St. Louis’ City Museum, and refers to the brief moment in gameplay that allows a player to decide between leaping forward or returning to safety.
Newly commissioned works by Tony Cokes will explore the global legacy of Tina Turner, the "Queen of Rock and Roll" whose musical career began in St. Louis, as well as how she is remembered by the community, and will be situated across four different sites around the city: The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, Antioch Baptist Church in The Ville, and a series of outdoor billboards.
Curated by Jordan Carter, Raphael Fonseca, Stefanie Hessler, Nora N. Khan, and Wanda Nanibush
