Greene Naftali will present a solo booth of new work by JACQUELINE HUMPHRIES at this year’s edition of Art Basel Hong Kong. Throughout her career Humphries has adapted to—and subverted—painting’s formal and discursive conditions, often with reference to both art history and cutting-edge technological formats. While her early work probes the legacy of Abstract Expressionism, Humphries has extended these strategies into the present, reimagining her analog medium in digital terms, as a screen or interface. Translating painted works into bit-mapped data and back into hand-crafted art, using laser-cut stencils and oils mixed to varying thickness, Humphries’s work displays a complex, and often ambiguous, combination of machine-tooled patterning and human gesture.
